Speegle

December 22nd, 2004

Speegle Search Engine. The search engine that speaks.

You will hear the robot reads the words “> > >” greater than greater than greater than. When it reads a long number such 20040727 as twenty million forty thousand seven hundred twenty seven. The robot will not read non-English character or words.

“It is still a bit robotic and can make a few mistakes but we are never going to have completely natural sounding voices and it is not bad,” said Speegle founder Gordon Renton.

The site also provides some quick keys accessibility.

Quick keystrokes: Press the number of the result to visit that page on searches or news.
Press n for next ten results b for back to previous ten results. Press a to visit advertisers page

The thing should be improved is the heavy traffic of the site will cause the speech not smoothly playing. Second, it uses ISO-8859-1 encoding instead of UTF-8 which shows unread character for non-English search results. Overall it is very nice and interesting.

Tabbed Browser

December 21st, 2004

It seems that after the Mozilla Firefox browser release, tabbed browsing issue becomes more popular. Even they were arguing about the tabbed browser Homer Simpson uses.

Which browser is the first to have the tabbed browsing feature anyway? Who invented the tabbed browser? I did some searching for the information and found two major claims:

  • The first browser to offer tabbed browsing was InternetWorks.
It was developed by Booklink Inc. in 1994. Anyway I cannot find any screenshot of the InternetWorks. It says that AOL bought the program and integrated in their online client (kind of Instant Messenger).
  • NetCaptor is the original tabbed browser.
NetCaptor is an alternative interface to the Microsoft Internet Explorer. This browser is a commercial one.

So… which/who is the first tabbed browser?

Note: I use the term tabbed browsing refers to the feature that enables us to open several web pages in the browser window at once, all instantly accessible through tabs. Another meaning for tabbed browsing refers to navigate the hyperlinks of a web page using the keyboard tab button, which is patented by Microsoft recently.

The Origin Name of Java

December 14th, 2004

People say Java (programming language) name comes from Indonesia. As some of my colleagues like to joke about the Indonesian people must be skillful in Java and ask me to introduce them some. Haha.. I said yess.. they ARE skillful in Java even speak Java in daily life.

Does Java name have relation with Indonesia? Yes, but not exactly. Java is more popular known as the slang word of coffee, which is produced on the island of Java, Indonesia.

Java inventor, James Gosling, firstly named the programming language as Oak, named after the oak tree outside his office. But the Oak name had already been trademarked by another programming language at that time, therefore in 1994 it was renamed as Java.

The chosen name of Java itself was discovered after many hours of brainstorming. The idea came out when James Gosling and his team had a break at a local coffee shop.

Some sayings claim that Java stands for the names of several individuals involved in the project: James Gosling, Arthur Van Hoff, and Andy Bechtolsheim. Another version says that Java is the acronym for Just Another Vague Acronym.
